This is probably the most common condition affecting the adult hip. The term refers to loss of the lining (hyaline cartilage) of the joint on both the femoral (ball) and acetabular (socket) side of the joint.
Risk factors for developing this disease are :

1. Age
2. Hereditary
3. Repetitive Injury
4. Obesity

Presenting symptoms are pain and stiffness in the joint. The disease can be very debilitating and limit many activities of daily living. It can also cause significant pain in bed at night leading to sleep disturbance.
Early signs are groin pain and loss of internal rotation of the hip.

Diagnosis is usually made clinically and with the aid of a pelvic  X ray.
